APEC Key Issues: Recovering Mining Investment and Promoting Formalization
The Economic Leaders’ Week will address a number of significant issues, including the recovery of mining investment in the Asia-Pacific region. Carlos Kuriyama, the director of the Policy Support Unit (PSU) of the APEC Secretariat, stated that the mining sector has experienced significant growth in recent years, particularly in Peru. Consequently, it is imperative to take action in this area. He cautioned during a press conference that production costs could also increase, which is a significant factor today.
The forum will also address the proposal for a roadmap to facilitate the transition to formalization. Kuriyama underscored the importance of streamlining paperwork to ensure that formalization procedures do not deter people from formalizing their businesses. He maintained that the expense of being formal must be less than that of being informal.
Improving human capital and access to more competitive credits are two issues that should be worked on in parallel with promoting formalization, said the director of the Support Unit, who stressed that only in this way will progress be made toward accomplishing this complex objective.
“The economies of China, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore will be the primary focus of the strengthening of relations between Peru and Asia,” Kuriyama stated. He also stated that this development will be highly advantageous for Peru, as it will encourage trade and investment in our country. He underscored that the primary concept of this edition of APEC will be multilateral cooperation.
